The past year has been one of the strangest I can remember in relation to stream flow levels on the South Platte coming out of Cheesman Reservoir. We had a big snowpack early in 2011 and it seems that every dam in the drainage has required maintenance operations of some kind to further effect water levels. I can't say for sure that this has come to an end, but I was very happy to see that there was 128 cfs coming out of Cheesman on Monday. I had been avoiding the Deckers area due simply to the fact that streamflow levels had been hovering in the 50's most of the fall and early winter. At 128 cfs, there are many more areas of the river that will hold fish, so even though the good weather brought out many other fisherman, there was plenty of water to fish.
Overall, the action was not spectacular but we did land a decent number of fish mainly on red midge imitations. There are some really quality fish in the section above Deckers right now. If they maintain the flows at a similar level to what they are right now, the fishing should only improve.
