The leaves are changing colors in Steamboat Springs and the fishing is better than ever! Due to a construction project at Stagecoach Reservoir there is an awful lot of water being released and the flows on the Yampa are exceptional for this time of year. Fishing has been good on the entire river and the lower Yampa is some of the best fishing in the valley right now. Overall blue winged olive mayflies in smaller sizes are taking lots of fish, however be on the lookout for brown trout dropping eggs fairly soon. In the fall an egg pattern dropped down to a small mayfly pattern is usually your best bet, but be on the lookout for rising fish!
Make sure you let the water temp warm up! It is getting cold at night and the water needs some sunlight to get the fish active in the morning.
A 9' 4-5 rod has you covered for the bulk of the trout fishing in this valley, a 9' 6 is ideal for casting large streamers when float fishing. Be sure to bring several 9' 4x leaders and some spare tippet in 3x-5x, you might need some 6x to fool the rainbows at the tail water.
