The water is finally at a level that is simply enjoyable to wade and we are experiencing some great hopper fishing on the banks of the Yampa river. The trico hatch has also been very thick in the morning, for best results try using a drowned trico with your nymph rig. Right now is a great time to target large brown trout, look for them right off a grassy bank ready to smack a hopper!
Get on the water early to avoid the tuber hatch!
A 9' 4-5 rod has you covered for the bulk of the trout fishing in this valley, a 9' 6 is ideal for casting large streamers when float fishing. Be sure to bring several 9' 4x leaders and some spare tippet in 3x-5x, you might need some 6x to fool the rainbows at the tail water.

Guides have been having great success using triple decker hopper patters in a fairly large size, # 8-10 but any good hopper pattern will do. As for trico's think small, flies in the # 20-22 size and don't be afraid to fish a drowned imitation in addition to dry fly patters. Overall the fish are happy right now and a variety of nymphs and attractor dry flies will produce if presented properly.
