The fishing is on in the Yampa Valley! Currently its not so much a question of what is hatching but more what is not hatching! We are seeing pods of fish consistently rising to PMD's, Yellow Sallies, Mahogany Duns, and the Green Drakes are even starting to show up. The hatch is the thickest when the water really starts to warm up from 10:30-12:30. When the hatch is off try nymph fishing with PMD nymphs and emerger patterns. Also, we are turning lots of nice fish on white, black, and olive streamer patterns. There may be no better time than now to fish the valley so get out here and fish!
Make sure you are on the water by mid-morning! This is the best dry fly fishing of the day!
A 9' 4-5 rod has you covered for the bulk of the trout fishing in this valley, a 9' 6 is ideal for casting large streamers when float fishing. Be sure to bring several 9' 4x leaders and some spare tippet in 3x-5x, you might need some 6x to fool the rainbows at the tail water.
