Its nearly time to give the bird dogs some well deserved rest and turn my attention back to fishing and the profession of guiding flyfisherman. One of the reasons I choose to make my home in Durango after moving from Arvada was the proxsimatey to one of the countrys best tailwaters and the year round fishing a hungry angler and wannabe guide could enjoy just an hour from one of Colorados greatest small towns. After 25 years in Durango and 20 as a full time guide, winter is still my favorite time to be on the Juan.
A combination of little to no crowds, good midge and baetis hatches and the butiful high desert weather make winter on the Juan a great flyfishing destination during the colder months. While a creative angler can mix a little golf in with he or shes trip to the San Juan during the summer months, someone who likes to make a few turns on vacation can take advantage of the southwests fantastic skiing at Telluride, Durango Mountian Resort (Purgatory) Taos and Silvertown Mountian.
If you are in need of a little fishing fix there is no better place than the Juan in the winter, good afternoon dryfly fishing, 15,000 fish per mile and mild weather equal a great time on the water.
A good guide, good cold beer (none of that swaggy PBR).
