Yes, we are seeing a blast of winter that will be gone in 24 hours or so. Our forecast for the next week is nice, with daytime highs in the 50's. The weather dictates a large portion of our fishing these days, and we have a great window coming our way. The Gunnison River from Almont to the Blue Mesa has been outstanding, with rainbows and browns feasting on kokanee salmon eggs. The East and Taylor are also fishing well, with very minimal anglers on the water. We have been still doing floats on the Gunnison, and 90 percent of the time we are the only boat on the river.
Try floatfishing the Gunnison or wading the East at the Roaring Judy. We have access to a mile of private property on the Taylor, which is on fire.
5 and 6 weight rods are the sticks of choice with 3,4,and 5x.
Small baetis type nymphs with an egg in front about 4-5 feet deep is the rig of choice. Midge pupa, san juan worms, and basic beadheads like pheasant tail are working well. The streamer bite is OK as well.
We will have great fishing until winter shuts the door. As long as our overnight lows stay in the 20s and daytime highs in the 50s, fishing will be solid. We are doing 2 anglers for the price of 1 through the end of the season - Full day 2 person float = $350. I can set you up with a cabin on the river or a B&B in Crested Butte.
