After a wet spring summer is finally here in the Yampa Valley and the fishing is really beginning to pick up! Runoff is subsiding very quickly and the Yampa River is beginning to drop and clear up. This is a great time of year to float fish the Yampa River through town. Right now a good variety of fishing can be found in the valley. The angler can make a trip to the Flat Tops to fish the head waters of the Yampa for cutthroat trout or still water for graying, fish the technical Stagecoach Tailwaters for large wild rainbow trout, or float fish the Yampa through town. Due to the high water streamers and nymphs are the name of the game right now. Caddis flies are really starting to show up on the river and the evenings are producing good fishing with nymphs and emergers prior to the hatch as well as some decent dry fly fishing in the late evening.
A 9' 4-5 rod has you covered for the bulk of the trout fishing in this valley, a 9' 6 is ideal for casting large streamers when float fishing. Be sure to bring several 9' 4x leaders and some spare tippet in 3x-5x, you might need some 6x to fool the rainbows at the tail water.
