We showed up to Silverthorne today with our heads held high fueled by a beautiful weather report and incredible fishing reports. It was going to be a great day! Well, everyone had the same idea as us. Come on really!?... Who can justify taking a day off to fish in January besides a couple shop guys? Turns out everyone had a great reason to get out today....
With the recent snow fall and cold weather spell, warm temps were what we all needed. And not to mention what we all didn't need. The sun shown bright on us today. Temps hit in the upper 30's - lower 40's causing ice to melt off in the river chilling it down. Fish were lethargic, leader and indicator shy and had seen more fisherman than fellow fish. Combat fishing is what I think they call it.
Never the less, we had a great time getting our tan on and just so happened to land a 21inch rainbow on a size 22 red zebra midge. Early morning showed the best results. We hooked up a couple of times and broke a couple of larger fish off in the snakey sections not more than 100yrds below the dam.
Advice: Fish Small, fish light, don't use an indicator if there is direct sunlight and bring sun tan lotion.
Most bigger fish, and definately more fish seemed to be closer to the dam. All of the traffic from the warm weather spike may have pushed the fish to travel up for safety and comfort away from the crowds. A theory for sure...
Size 22-24: Red/Black zebra midge, red juju baeits, peach pearl small egg patterns, red/natural san juan worms. Any small, thin midgy patterns should produce.
