Five-Minute Flies: The Mile High 25 Edition

We’re looking forward to kicking off the 4th Annual Mile High 25 this weekend! In case you haven’t heard, the Mile High 25 is a multi-species fly fishing tournament. Two-person teams have two days to target a list of 25 eligible fish species, on any public water in Colorado. At the end of two days, the team with the most species wins.

Hosted by Simms and Anglers All, there will be $2,500 in cash prizes up for grabs this weekend. Plus, teams will take home some awesome swag, and have opportunities at other prizes thanks to tournament sponsors that include Sage, Ross Reels, Rep Your Water, Abel, Scott, Scientific Anglers, Umpqua and Fishpond.

To help us celebrate a new year of the Mile High 25 tournament, Alec Gerbec from Umpqua Feather Merchants stopped by our fly tying studio to tie up a Simi Seal Leech. This is a very simple, but very effective stillwater pattern. Additionally, it will make a special appearance in this year’s tournament.

Umpqua will provide the Simi Seal leech to all Mile High 25 participants. The team that documents the most species of fish caught on their flies from Umpqua, will receive a bonus prize. Teams will need to take a short video clip of the fly being removed and the fish swimming away.
