In our previous blog post, we shared some of our favorite tips and tactics for fall streamer fishing. This time, we asked our crew to share their favorite streamer patterns.
Fall is a great time to be out on the water in general. The scenery is beautiful. There are great opportunities for dry fly fishing. But without a doubt, one of the best things about fall fly fishing is the opportunity to fish big streamers! As the seasons change, big trout are looking to capitalize on big meals.
We went around the shop and asked our crew to name their favorite streamer patterns. Here are some of the flies you will find us fishing throughout the fall:
Chris’ Pick:
The Game Changer on a Titan Sink Tip Fly Line. Because all your fishing pals tell you it’s not going to work.
Jeff’s Pick:
Mini Johnson on a Scientific Anglers Trout Express fly line. It might as well be called The Wayne Gretzky, because all this thing does is get trophies. This fly will catch any species that you throw it at. I was happy to turn Delaney onto this one.
Brandon’s Pick:
I just had a great day on the Fork fishing the Double Thin Mint with a floating Rio Bank Robber fly line. The water was shallow and clear in places, but as soon as the fly dropped over any sort of structure or shelf it would get eaten!
Neil’s Pick:
The Sex Dungeon. I fish this heavy streamer with fast strips, and it can be used with a floating or sinking fly line. When using it with a sinking line, keep it moving.
Ben Baxter’s Pick:
Thin Mint, on a floating, intermediate or triple density fly line, depending on the water depth. The multiple colors in this fly with a little added flash can make a difference.
Ben Kinne’s Pick:
Clouser Minnow. I mostly fish the Clouser minnow on floating lines, because of the heavy eyes and relatively sparse material. The clouser minnow has caught me the most variety of fish species of any fly - trout, bass, salmon, redfish, pike, and it can catch many more. If it ain’t chartreuse, it ain’t no use!
Jimmy’s Pick:
Drunk and Disorderly in the olive-gold color on an intermediate fly line. This fly has the fall brown trout colors and a killer action in the water. I like the pause you get after the strip. It really gets those trout into attack mode.
Delaney’s Pick:
Schloppy Toppy all the way! Short and heavy sink tips are the way to go. On lakes, a full sinking line, Intermediate/Sink 2/Sink 3 is my favorite.
Johnnie’s Pick:
My favorite pattern would have to be Andersson’s SID. But among the streamers we sell, it would be the Barely Legal. This fly swims great, it is castable in heavy wind, imitates a ton of baitfish, and gets down quick. It can also be fished effectively on a long leader floating line setup or with a short leader sink tip setup. I have also fished this on the two-hand stick and it swings great as well.
