Brian Chou’s Fortune Cookie – New Fly Tying Video

We’ve got a new fly tying video now live on our YouTube channel, and this time it’s one for the streamer fanatics and trout spey anglers.

Anglers All manager Greg Garcia is behind the vise, showing us how to tie one of our favorites from Brian Chou, the Fortune Cookie. Brian is a steelhead angler and tier for Montana Fly Company.

Brian Chou's Fortune Cookie is a reimagining of the classic Wooly Bugger with some awesome additions. If you’ve ever fished a Wooly Bugger, you’ve certainly experienced the short strike – a fish will often eat the back section of the fly where there’s no hook. You’ll feel the bumps, but you won’t hook the fish.

After experiencing this same frustration, Brian sat down at the vise and came up with the new Fortune Cookie fly pattern. Among its many cool features, this streamer has trailing hook that sits back in the marabou tail of the fly, eliminating the short-strike problem.

While it was designed with steelhead in mind, Brian Chou's Fortune Cookie is a great fly to fish with a single-handed fly rod, just like you’d fish a Wooly Bugger. But it’s also one of our favorites for trout spey fishing.

After you watch the video, check out the Fortune Cookie Page, and use the “Tie This Fly” section to shop from the materials list for this fly recipe.

Check out the new video, with a step-by-step look at Chou's Fortune Cookie. If you enjoy the video, please like it on YouTube and subscribe to the Anglers All Channel!
