Holiday Gift Guide Part 1: The Avid Angler

The holidays are upon us. Whether you’re shopping for an avid anger, or just an aspiring one, we all have one thing in common: we love new fishing gear!

To help with ideas this holiday season, we’ve put together five different gift lists. Over the next several weeks, we will outline gift ideas in each of the following categories:

  1. The Avid Angler
  2. The Angler Who Has it All
  3. The New Angler
  4. The Fly Tier
  5. Stocking Stuffers

This week, we begin with The Avid Angler. Do you know someone (or are you someone) who has been bitten by the fly fishing bug? Perhaps they have the fundamental gear, but they would love a nice upgrade, or something unique.

Here are 5 ideas to help find the perfect gift for the Avid Angler:

  1. Fly Box or Streamer Wallet with an Assortment of New Flies

To this end, check out a Cliff fly box that features original artwork by Derek DeYoung. It comes pre-loaded with some of our favorite streamer patterns. This is a killer gift for any avid trout anger.

Are you shopping for an angler with a penchant for saltwater fly fishing? Then take a look at our stocked Cliff boat box that features artwork by J Martinez. It includes a Grand Slam fly assortment, featuring some of the best patterns for permit, bonefish and tarpon.

If you have a steelhead junky on your list this year, there’s something for you too. We carry beautifully made FINN Streamer Wallets that come with an assortment of steelhead flies.

  1. A New Fly Reel

For the avid angler who would appreciate a new fly reel, we have a couple of ideas. First, You can’t go wrong with the new Ross Animas. This new fly reel from Colorado-based Ross Reels was just released this fall, and is already making waves.

Second, take a look at the new Redington Grande Fly Reel, another beautifully designed reel that any avid angler would be excited to add to their arsenal.

  1. Fishpond Nomad River Armor Nets

Nomad River Armor nets from Fishpond are built on a carbon fiber core and feature an outer layer of woven Kevlar fiber and carbon fiber. This creates a net with incredible durability. This net can stand up to any boulder hopping, bushwhacking expedition that you can think of.

The Nomad River Armor nets are available in three different sizes: Emerger, Mid-Length, and El Jefe.

  1. A New Layering System

Many avid anglers don’t recognize seasonal boundaries. Fishing isn’t just a summertime activity. If that describes someone you know, then they might appreciate a new layering system.

Consider hooking them up with new Patagonia Capilene Base Layers (top and bottoms).

For insulation, they might appreciate a Patagonia Tough Puff Hoody, available in men’s and women’s. For more ideas, see our Layering Category online.

For outerwear, it’s hard to beat the Simms G3 Guide Jacket, or the Patagonia River Salt Jacket, which is also available in women’s and men’s. Check out our lineup of jackets here.

  1. Black Diamond Headlamps

Whether fishing for bass or big brown trout on a moonlit night, or just an evening hike back to the truck on these short December days, every angler should carry a quality headlamp in their pack. A new Black Diamond headlamp might just be the perfect gift!
