Streamer Time: New Sculpzilla Fly Tying Video

With our own Greg Garcia behind the vise and Davis James on the cameras, we’re stoked about a new fly tying video. This time it’s one for the streamer fans, and it’s probably one of our best-selling streamers here at the fly shop. If you’ve never fished a Sculpzilla, you’re missing out. This is one of the fishiest streamer patterns out there, and a shop favorite.

In this version, Greg makes a couple of notable variations from the original Sculpzilla recipe. First, he’s tying the fly with a size 8 hook. This smaller version is extremely versatile and well suited to many of our trout waters here in Colorado, in addition to bass and other warm water applications. Most importantly however, the smaller size is manageable and easier to cast.

Because of the size difference, Greg is using dyed grizzly soft hackle in the collar rather than the original guinea feather. And you’ll notice he chooses to go with a pearl Ice Dubbing rather than olive. But one of the great things about the Sculpzilla is the ability to fish them in a wide range of colors. In addition to Olive, we go through plenty of black, white, natural, and sunrise Sculpzillas.

Please note a couple of tips before you begin. First, don’t forget to de-barb your hooks! In addition to saving fish, your fingers will thank you. Working with these hooks on an articulated fly body is a recipe for sticking yourself.

Finally, take note that Greg uses a cup of water on his desk. This comes in handy a couple times while tying this pattern. It’s useful for parting the hair on your rabbit zonkers, and for taming the soft hackle feathers when wrapping the collar.
