DESTINATION: ESTANCIA DEL ZORRO, CHILE

Fly Fish Patagonia's Famous Spring Creeks

Estancia Del Zorro is a favorite of ours in Chilean Patagonia. This sister lodge to Cinco Rios lodge is a working horse ranch located outside Coyhaique and sits right on the the Argentinian border. This more rustic and remote location affords the angler the opportunity to fish both countries in a single visit. Zorro is home to great examples of Patagonia's famous spring creeks where big dry fly eating rainbow and brown trout feed in water you can almost step across.

The variety of water here, much of it on the Zorro property, includes spring creek lagoons, canyons, and larger rivers is all consuming. An angler can choose to stay at this lodge for the entire week or arrange to a split week with the main lodge. Beyond the water, you are as likely to see any of the 100 Arabian Horses living on the property as you are Andean Condors flying above.

This lodge can accommodate 12 guests based on double occupancy. The rooms here are large, light filled and very nicely appointed. The great room and bar gathers anglers after a day on the water to tell stories and share pictures. All meals and beverages both on the water and back at the lodge are included in your stay. This location also gives anglers and non-anglers the opportunity to visit the Valley of the Moon and see the Andean Condors in a very special and up close cliff side location.

Non-Angling Activities

Being that Estancia is a working horse ranch, riding is a great option to enjoy the Patagonia country side for some time off the water, as well as opportunities to spot soaring Condor’s on the nearby cliff sides. Day hikes as well as Chilean culinary events are also available.

Recommended Gear

The Estancia is best known for its spring creek fisheries, targeting aggressively rising brown trout with large dry fly patterns. The wind blows here and the fish are smart. 6 wt fly rods with floating fly line is ideal to bunch through the wind and deliver your dry on target as well as be able to steer these strong fish away from weed beds and undercut banks. A 7 wt rods with a sinking line or sinking tip you can dedicate to streamer fishing is a great idea too. Waders, boots and warm layers are recommended as well.
