South America Is Calling With Two Spectacular Patagonian Fly Fishing Destinations

If you are like us, the change of seasons makes you want to dust off your dry fly rod and start looking forward to warmer days hunting rising trout. If you are like us, you are also itching to dust off your passport and have been day dreaming of hopping on a plane with fly rods in hand headed to your next fishing destination adventure.

While staying on the dry fly theme, lets talk about two fantastic destinations where a dry fly rod and your passport are required pieces of gear! The first is a beautiful spot tucked in to the east side of the Argentinian Andes, overlooking a pristine trout river connected by deep cold water lakes. The second, in Chilean Patagonia, a duo of lodges offering a mind boggling amount of fishable waters ranging from spring creeks, to glacial lakes, and big western style rivers. And of course, both offering legendary dry fly fishing.

Argentina

Rio Manso Lodge is our home away from home in Argentina. The lodge, the guides, the staff and of course the food and wine always keep us comfortable when we are there, and keep us looking forward to our next visit when we are back home. Their first-class spacious lodge overlooks the Manso River and its interconnected lakes that harbor brook, brown and rainbow trout, all growing to sizes that can border on lifetime fish.

For the 2022/2023 season we have dates reserved to target the famous dragon fly hatch. The week of November 27th to December 4th is one of the first open weeks of their spring season. When the sun shines you are likely to see these hungry fish blow up on your dragon fly dry flies and become airborne in their pursuit. It is an experience in angling that can only be found in a few places across the world and one every passionate trout angler has to put on their bucket list. With the lure of a huge airborne meal flying over the shallows of these Patagonian lakes, this is the one time of year the biggest fish in the system come up to feed on the surface.

Of course, not every day is sunny, but the angling opportunities never stop. Packing a streamer rod and fishing a sink tip line can be very productive no matter the weather or the water the guides lead you to. Big rivers, small creeks, remote ride-in secret waters, and flats style lake fishing, are all found here.

When our guests are not fishing, but looking for an alternative activity, the lodge itself as well as the surrounding area offers adventures in hiking, waterfall tours, horseback riding, bird watching, shopping, golf and of course a relaxing massage. There is no luxury missing from a stay at Rio Manso Lodge, for the angler, or non-angler.

Chile

The staff at Cinco Rios has become our Chilean family over the years. As the 2022/2023 season approaches we will be looking forward to our 9th year heading south to Patagonia to fish with the team there. Our week at the end of February puts the angler in a perfect window to fish dry flies on both sides of the Andes Mountains, as well as fantastic fall streamer fishing opportunities. One of the many spectacular things about a week long fishing adventure at Cinco Rios is the incredible amount of water you have access to. You will also have the opportunity to stay and fish out of their Estancia Del Zorro property for half your trip.

Upon arrival in Southern Chile, your first stop will be Estancia Del Zorro. This working horse ranch, over looking the pampas and famous spring creeks has been in the Cinco Rios family for generations. While the location and views by day and night (the stars are incredible) make you feel like you are at an outpost camp, the rooms, accommodations and food, are first class all the way. The featured fishing here is dry fly fishing on technical springs creeks that hold trophy brown trout.

After the rods are broken down and the waders come off on your third guided day at EDZ, you will move to the main lodge which overlooks the beautiful Simpson River valley. Here, unbelievably, the accommodations and food get cranked up to 11! The next morning you will embark on the first of three days of fishing from Cinco Rios Lodge. Here you will mostly fish from boats on the area's glacial fed lakes and big flowing rivers. You will target big strong rainbow and brown trout with whichever method you prefer, although we recommend dry flies, all day! The views of snow-capped peaks towering over blue-ish green water sets the scene for lots of smiles.
