The Flat Tops Wilderness area drains the headwaters of the White River in northwest Colorado. It’s the state’s second-largest wilderness area, with about 370 square miles of wild country.
About 40 miles from the nearest paved road, tucked against the wilderness boundary and the upper White River, sits a little outpost that’s been operating in the Colorado backcountry since the late 1920s. Budge’s Wilderness Lodge is a home base for anglers to explore the 20-plus miles of roadless river canyon and surrounding alpine lakes on horseback.
