Inside Winston Fly Rod Design: A Chat with Hank Haen on the Air 2 Max and Pure 2 Series

Published by: Ryan McSparran, 9/30/2024 2:32 pm

Here at Anglers All, we’ve been fishing Winston fly rods for decades. In fact, Anglers All is Winston’s longest standing dealer. As one of the industry's oldest and most trusted brands, Winston knows what it means to walk the line between art and science in fly rod design.

Their latest innovations are the Air 2 Max and Pure 2 series. The Air 2 Max is pushing technological boundaries and redefining what it means to fish with a Winston, in a saltwater-specific application. Meanwhile, the Pure 2 carries those new technologies into a rod that perfectly captures the Winston roots in a dry fly fishing specialist.

To dig deeper into the inspiration and process behind these exciting new fly rods, we caught up with Winston fly rod designer Hank Haen, who gave us an inside look at how these rods came to life.

Our Favorite Flies for Fall Streamer Fishing

Published by: Ryan McSparran, 9/26/2024 9:42 am

In our previous blog post, we shared some of our favorite tips and tactics for fall streamer fishing. This time, we asked our crew to share their favorite streamer patterns.

Fall is a great time to be out on the water in general. The scenery is beautiful. There are great opportunities for dry fly fishing. But without a doubt, one of the best things about fall fly fishing is the opportunity to fish big streamers! As the seasons change, big trout are looking to capitalize on big meals.

Our Crew Shares Their Favorite Dry-Dropper Flies

Published by: Ryan McSparran, 8/29/2024 9:55 am

It’s dry-dropper season here in Colorado. While grasshoppers, ants and other bugs are buzzing around mountain meadows, throwing a hopper-dropper or dry-dropper rig is one of our favorite ways to fish. It’s equal parts fun and effective.

Whether you’re fishing a mountain lake or river, splashing a dry fly pattern along a brushy or grassy bank can elicit voracious strikes. Combine that with an enticing bug below the surface, and you’ve got a deadly combo. Fishing two water columns at once. Hoppers and other terrestrials can be particularly effective on windy days or whenever there’s a little chop on the water. But really, it’s hard to find a bad time to fish a dry-dropper rig, as long as those late-summer bugs are present.

Flies For Colorado with Umpqua Feather Merchants

Published by: Blake Katchur, 8/14/2024 4:12 pm

It is no secret Colorado has very diverse fishing opportunities across its elevation changes and geography. When you look at the state as a whole, you can consider three different fishing zones, the Front Range, High Country and the Western Slope. We sat down with Russ Miller of Umpqua Feather Merchants to discuss these zones, our favorite flies, laugh a bunch and talk about the feeling you get when you hike in five miles only to find the lake you hoped to fish frozen over.

On the Front Range you can find some amazing warm water fishing in the South Platte and its tributaries as it meanders through Denver and heads east. Do not forget however, the countless city ponds, lakes and reservoirs stretching towards Kansas and Nebraska that are often inhabited by species not often targeted with a fly rod.

If you haven’t stopped by the Anglers All Boathouse in Littleton yet and seen these boats, they are innovative, versatile, and easy to transport.

The Slipstream series is designed to be a rugged and durable, yet nimble fly-fishing raft. While the Approach series takes its lightweight and transportable design even a step further.

How (and Why) Greg Garcia Developed the Mother’s Day Caddis

Published by: Ryan McSparran, 5/9/2024 11:40 am

“I can remember it vividly,” Greg told us. “I planned to go down to the Arkansas River and fish. I knew I was going to get a late start that day. I had read some reports, and the fly shops down there were saying that the fish weren’t interested in dry flies until the evening, because there were so many caddis on the water. There was a huge blanket hatch of caddis from bank to bank.”

Developing new fly patterns – now that’s a cool job. And according to Brita Fordice, the best part, might be coming up with new names for them all.

We recently had the opportunity to chat with fly tyer and fishing guide, Brita Fordice. Brita works as a Product Developer for Far Bank (Sage, Redington, RIO), and she is the mastermind behind many of Rio’s fly patterns.

We asked Brita about her background and how she became a fly designer. We talked about the development and testing process, and what it takes to bring a fly from concept to production. And of course, we asked about some of those off-the-wall fly names…

So You Bought a Boat – Now What? Equip it for Adventure

Published by: Ryan McSparran, 7/26/2023 8:32 am

One of the most fun things about buying a new boat is personalizing it and making it your own. From the “must have” items like safety equipment, to the “nice to have” items to fit your style of fishing, there are many ways to equip a boat.

We spent some time chatting with Anglers All Boathouse manager, Johnnie Trujillo, and he offered some great recommendations in each category. Johnnie also noted that many of these suggestions will apply to any type of boat – from a float tube, to a multi-person watercraft.

A Guide To Fly Rod Length: When to Stray from the 9-Foot Rod

Published by: Ryan McSparran, 4/27/2023 10:59 am

Here in Rocky Mountain trout country, the 9-foot 5-weight fly rod is as ubiquitous as the Parachute Adams. For many anglers, it’s the go-to rod for everything from dry flies to nymphs to streamers. If you’ve got one rod, it’s a great one to own.

But there’s a big world of fly rods out there. And they’re available in a variety of different lengths. Why purchase an 8’ 6” 5-weight over the nine-footer? When does a 10-foot fly rod make sense? What about a seven-footer?

FAQs: Felt vs. Rubber Wading Boots and Studs

Published by: Ryan McSparran, 11/10/2022 10:24 am

As snow and ice become a regular occurrence on rivers throughout the winter, wading boot traction becomes a big question for many anglers. Even throughout the summer months, some of our local waters like the Arkansas and Eagle Rivers are notorious for being slick.

Depending on where you fish and when you fish, it helps to know a few things about wading boot traction. What’s the real difference between rubber and felt? When does it make sense to add studs to your wading boots? Here, we’ve compiled some answers to those frequently asked questions…

Our Favorite Multi-Species Fly Patterns

Published by: Ryan McSparran, 5/26/2022 10:32 am

It’s almost time for the seventh annual Mile High 25 fly fishing tournament. And that has us combing through fly boxes and narrowing down our favorite multi-species patterns. If you had to pick your most versatile flies to catch as many different species as possible, what would they be?

The objective of the Mile High 25 is to target a list of 25 eligible fish species on any public water in Colorado – all on the fly. At the end of two days, the team with the most species caught and released wins. As a tournament, it’s totally unique. It’s not about who can catch the biggest fish or even the most fish. Think of it as a crazy, two-day scavenger hunt with a fly rod where anyone, no matter your ability level, is welcome to participate and can have a blast.

Fall fly fishing can be some of the best of the year. But it’s not like showing up to the river in July. Mornings can be cold. Afternoons can be hot. And as soon as the sun dips behind a cloud or the horizon, conditions can change quickly. Don’t miss the opportunity to get out and enjoy the spectacular fall fishing. Gear up with a few essentials to make the most of it.

There Are No Dumb Questions In Fly Fishing

Published by: Matt Harkema, 9/1/2021 9:58 am

Can you remember the first time you picked up a fly rod? I can. I was seventeen years old in the backyard of my friend's house in Golden Valley, Minnesota. It was a 9 foot 5 weight complete starter kit with an indicator tied on so I could practice casting for our upcoming expedition. We were heading to Yellowstone National Park for a week to fish the Gardner River, Firehole River, and Slough Creek with huge Stoneflies and Salmon flies paired alongside classic Copper Johns.

The Umpqua Interviews Part 2: How Umpqua Produces Premium Flies

Published by: Larkin Wilson, 8/19/2021 5:04 pm

When it comes to fly production, this Louisville, CO-based bug behemoth takes no shortcuts. Umpqua’s process is meticulous and thorough. They task their factories with recreating all of the flies to the exact specifications of their Signature Tyers, which ensures every pattern that leaves the warehouse is going to be the exact same as the previous batch. Umpqua also sources premium hooks and the best fly tying materials on the market. Maintaining this high level of quality, obviously, is an arduous task. The man in charge of that task? Umpqua’s Director of Product, Brett Bauer

Wet Wading Essentials – Tips and Recommended Gear

Published by: Ryan McSparran, 7/22/2021 12:12 pm

Summer is the time to cast off your waders and step into that clear, cold, Rocky Mountain water. We love wet wading season around here. It means exploring small creeks, alpine lakes and our favorite high country waters.

Wet wading simply means going without waders. There are many ways to approach wet wading. It can be as simple as shorts and a pair of sandals; or perhaps quick-dry pants and your favorite wading boots. Ask a handful of anglers how they approach wet wading and you’ll likely get a handful of different answers.

The Umpqua Interviews Part 1: Umpqua’s Origins

Published by: Ryan McSparran, 5/27/2021 9:45 am

“The modern history of fly fishing is told within the pages of the Umpqua catalog…”

Dennis Black and Randall Kaufman founded Umpqua Feather Merchants, pioneering fly production in ways that until that time, were thought to be impossible. Using Tiemco hooks, high quality materials and an impeccable standard for quality, Umpqua made the best fly patterns available to anglers everywhere. They’ve now been doing it for 50 years. And it’s a story worth telling.

Winston Fly Rods 8-Weight Review - Air Salt v. Alpha +

Published by: Blake Katchur, 5/17/2021 2:08 pm

Let me start by saying we didn't catch any Redfish. We crisscrossed the bay, poled fishy marshes, casted what felt like every fly in our boxes, and no Redfish. We might as well call this trip, the "Texas Flounder Trip". I'd like to tell you we went down there with the sole purpose of testing out two of the finest Winston Fly Rods offers, but that would not be true, we went down to the Texas Coast to catch Redfish, and we didn't.

A Brief History of The Mile High 25. A Fly Fishing Tournament

Published by: Blake Katchur, 5/5/2021 9:30 am

June 19th & 20th of 2021 will mark the 6th Annual Mile High 25 Fly Fishing Tournament where two angler teams attempt to catch 25 identified species on the fly, on public water, all across Colorado, in just 2 days. Sounds like a wild idea right? And a challenging endeavor? You are right about that, in 5 years of competition not a single team has completed the list. That's 450 anglers, and 49,500 hours of fishing, and no perfect scores.

Streamer Fly Rods Explained

Published by: Streamer Fly Rods Explained, 9/4/2020 11:50 am

We should clear things up right away by saying we don’t believe in any such thing as “streamer season”. There’s no bad time of year to fish a streamer. But if you had to pin us down, we’d admit that the fall months are the highpoint of streamer fishing. Hungry trout are feeding opportunistically, packing on calories before winter.

Mile High 25 Recap & Summer Fishing Opportunities

Published by: Davis James, 7/1/2020 11:55 am

The Mile High 25 resembles a scavenger hunt on steroids but with a twist. The movie “Rat Race” comes to mind. Each year, teams of two anglers pair up for a non-stop fishing adventure that distributes participants all over the state. During the 48-hour timeframe, anglers search for and catch as many species on the fly as possible with a mission to CATCH-VIDEO-RELEASE each fish.

Odd Rods: When to Stray from the Standard 9-Foot Fly Rod

Published by: Ryan McSparran, 6/4/2020 10:56 am

When you stray from the standard 9-foot fly rod, there are advantages in going either direction. Shorter rods tend to be more accurate and offer better handling in tight quarters. While longer rods tend to offer more power and distance. But it’s not always that simple.

Here’s a quick guide to fly rod length and why it matters to you as an angler:

Runoff was hardly factor worth noting. Fast-forward to this year’s multi-species fly fishing event, and snowpack was nearly double average levels.
